Announcing
Harvard University Project on Human Rights and Criminal Justice
Greetings!
I write to introduce you to the website for a project at Harvard
University's Kennedy School of Government, the Executive Session on
Human Rights Commissions and Criminal Justice. The website
supports the work of the Executive Session, which is a discussion
and research forum that is exploring ways to expand the role of
human rights and human relations commissions in addressing issues of
discrimination in U.S.criminal justice systems.
The link for the site is: http://www.hrccj.org
The most recent addition to the website is the transcript of a
speech delivered at the last meeting of the Executive Session by
Trevor
Phillips in October 2006. At the time, Mr. Phillips was Chair
of the Commission for Racial Equality in the United Kingdom.
He has since been appointed Chair of the new Commission of Equality
and Human Rights, which begins operations in fall 2007.
Additional publications on the
website address ways in which human rights commissions can get more
involved in criminal justice issues. Topics include ways in which
commissions can work to build trust in communities following a
controversial police shooting and ways they can help to increase
police force diversity.
We welcome any feedback on the Executive Session program or the site
itself. Also, please feel free to share the link with others
who might find the website of interest.
Best wishes!
