NFHA Applauds Confirmation of Gustavo Velasquez as HUD’s Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity

WASHINGTON, DC – Shanna L. Smith, President and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance, issued the following statement applauding the confirmation of Gustavo Velasquez Aguilar as the next Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“Mr. Velasquez has an impressive track record in civil rights and has worked to ensure that all families have the right to seek and obtain housing free from discrimination. We welcome his confirmation and are confident that he will successfully lead HUD’s work to ensure equality in the housing market.

“The housing crisis was especially hard on women, families with children, people with disabilities, and people of color. As Director of the D.C. Office of Human Rights for almost 8 years, Mr. Velasquez demonstrated a commitment to enforcing civil and human rights statutes protecting the nation’s most vulnerable populations, investigating and resolving over 2,000 complaints of unlawful discrimination.

“HUD’s fair housing work is critical to ensuring that all families have the opportunity to access housing of their choice and all of the life opportunities that come along with it. Gustavo Velasquez will make an excellent Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and I applaud the Senate for his confirmation.”
